What are the dental crowns? How are they placed?
A dental crown is a custom-fitted dental device used to repair tooth damage that is too pronounced for a dental filling. A dental crown fits over the remaining tooth structure to restore its strength and protect it from further damage. Dental crowns have several uses in dentistry.Â
The dentist may use a dental crown to:
- Support a dental bridge
- Cover a dental implant
- Reinforce a root canal-treated tooth
- Cosmetically modify a misshapen or discolored tooth
- Strengthen a severely decayed or damaged tooth
Dental crowns are designed in our office and fabricated in a dental lab. That’s why you may need 2-3 dental visits to benefit from a dental crown. The first visit is a consultation to examine your tooth’s suitability for a crown. Then, the dentist prepares your tooth by reshaping the enamel to create space for your restoration. If your tooth is decayed, the damaged portions are gently removed but carefully enough not to compromise the pulp chamber.Â
Next, the dentist takes a digital scan of your tooth and sends the images to our partner dental lab to fabricate your crown. Since this may take a few days, the dentist will temporarily restore your prepped tooth. Once your crown is ready, you’ll schedule an appointment for placement. The dentist will make a few tweaks to your restoration to ensure a natural look and snug fit. The final step is to bond your crown permanently to your tooth.Â
How are dental bridges placed?
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth in a row. A traditional bridge fits seamlessly on the area left without teeth and is anchored to the surrounding teeth (abutments) with dental crowns. A dental bridge offers a fixed solution for missing teeth. They don’t slip, fall out, or click when eating or speaking. Traditional bridges are a game-changer in teeth replacement, but you can enhance their stability by stabilizing them with implants. Implant-supported bridges also mean you don’t have to compromise your otherwise healthy teeth.Â
Placing dental bridges requires at least 2-3 appointments. After consultation, the dentist will prepare the abutment teeth by reshaping the enamel. Then, we’ll take digital scans of your teeth to create a blueprint for building your bridgework. Our partner dental lab creates your bridge and crowns with clear guidelines from our dentist. Your restorations are meticulously fabricated to fit the exact specifications of your teeth. In the meantime, we’ll protect your teeth with a temporary restoration.Â
You’ll visit us for placement when your bridges and crowns are ready. The dentist first places your crowns, followed by your bridge. After several try-ins to establish the optimal alignment for your bridgework, we’ll bond it permanently to your teeth with strong dental cement. That’s it! You can now eat, smile, and talk without reservations.
